Sample - Window blind or placemat. Woven using cattail rushes in warp along with jute fibers. Weft yarns are olive, cream and blue and are woven in stripes/bands so warp shows.
Alice Mattil made several samples (see "related objects") of placemats and window blinds. A note with the objects reads, "I did many placemats and window blinds for family and friends. I experimented for weavings using natural Kansas materials."...View Full Record

Placemat - Fifteen green ovals/lozenges on medium blue/purple background. Linen. Twill threading, but hand picked up; plain weave. Warp is light and dark blue linen in pairs. Weft is red-violet linen. Pattern weft is 2 threads, yellow and green singles. Hemmed.
Weave analysis: Dark and light blue are randomly threaded in pairs in separate heddles (because they lie parallel and not twisted). Draft could be twill with 2 threads side by side (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4,) as a possible threading. Woven in a duKagang appearance, lifting one shaft for the inlay which is hand picked-up in the design, with tabby....View Full Record
